Nebraska task force lauded for drug arrests and seizures

The federal government’s Drug Enforcement Administration recently the Nebraska Commercial Interdiction Unit for its work. The local drug investigators made 108 arrests on drug-related charges from October 2017 to September of last year.

In the process, they seized 45 pounds of heroin, 58 pounds of fentanyl, 10 pounds of cocaine and 72 pounds of methamphetamine, the DEA said.

The Nebraska law enforcement unit also took possession of nearly 700 pounds of marijuana and products containing THC (the active ingredient in cannabis). In all, the drug force confiscated illegal drugs valued at $8.6 million, the DEA said.

While those are significant numbers, there are also numbers to be considered as well. For instance, if you are arrested in possession of even a trace amount of cocaine and found guilty in a Lincoln courtroom, you could be sentenced to five years in a Nebraska state prison and fined up to $10,000.

Similar penalties can await those convicted of crystal meth possession: up to five years behind bars and up to $10,000 in fines. Those numbers don’t even scratch the surface of the damage done by a drug conviction and prison sentence to a person’s family, career, personal relationships, pursuit of education and so on.

The penalties for drug possession are harsh – many argue that they’re too harsh – but they pale in comparison to the penalties that can be assessed for drug delivery and distribution. People convicted on these charges can range from a minimum of three years for a Class ID felony to a maximum of life in prison for conviction on a Class IB felony.
